- Clarion Call
This is the official online store of Atelier Nishikata, a Tokyo-based architecture firm. We sell products that Atelier Nishikata is involved in. The name Clarion Call comes from what Henri Matisse said in an interview. It is “coup de clarion” in French. The relevant passages are as below: “Often, you put two colors side by side. They don’t harmonize in the way that you’d like; but by putting on a third color, you achieve the right effect, the ‘clarion call,’ as Van Gogh said to Emile Bernard.” “I would apply my color, the first one on the canvas. I would place a second one next to it, and then, instead of redoing it if this second color seemed not to accord with the first, I would apply a third color, designed to bring them into harmony. Then I had to continue like this until I felt I’d created a complete harmony in my canvas, and had discharged myself of the emotion that had brought me to undertake the work.” (Yve-Alain Bois, “On Matisse: The Blinding: For Leo Steinberg,” trans. Greg Sims, October, no 68.) What “clarion call” means here is a method and theory that shows a concrete path leading your intuition into practice. We Atelier Nishikata consider this idea as support for thinking in everyday work. atelier nishikata www.atelier-nishikata.info/
